Purpose of this Blog - Shenzhen Survival Guide

Shenzhen Survival Guide:

I have a Facebook Group which I founded and administer called the

Shenzhen Survival Guide - Secrets & Hints for Expats/Foreigners

The purpose of that Group was to make living in Shenzhen China easier, more familiar, and/or more western for non-chinese speaking people. There are things you learn as you live here that you wish someone would have told you when you moved to Shenzhen or China. That is the goal of the FaceBook Group. But as the Group grows, I find that the information is more conducive to a Blog, and perhaps ultimately a book. That is why everything is (C) 2014 David M, Ginsberg, whether as an original work of authorship and/or a compilation.

In any event, each post will try to have a different topic, such as restaurants which deliver but speak English. Those of us who live here know that there are tons of restaurants, and most deliver, and many deliver 24/7/365. But because we don't speak Chinese, we can't avail ourselves to this wonderful feature of Shenzhen. We can't read the menus which are slipped daily under our door. Nor can we order or even tell the people our address. But there are some restaurants which do accommodate English. So there is a post which lists them and submissions are welcome.

Feel homesick for food from your hometown or country? We list the grocery stores which carry foreign food. NoGoGo is an online grocery store which carries lots of the food I used to purchase in America (albeit at several times the price) and they even deliver free of charge. There are posts about that.

Miss your favorite TV shows, we tell you how to view them. You have to both get around Chinese Censorship (as you would to use Facebook or read this Blog), but you also have to trick the broadcaseter into thinking you are located in their country (like theUSA). We explain about VPN services.

Like southern Florida, the heat makes roaches a problem, Unlike the USA, there are no extermination companies, and many of the chemicals used are highly toxic. There is one company which gets rid of your roaches, Shenzhen Exterminating and we tell you how to find them,

Feel free to suggest a post or to submit one which you have written.

Health Care in Shenzhen - Hong Kong University in Shenzhen

First, get your flu shot. This is all the more important as Ebola threatens the world, since some of the symptoms of the Flu mimic the symptoms of Ebola. Second, more people will die of the Flu in America (or China) in one year than have died from Ebola (since its discovery decades ago).

If you need to see a doctor, you have two choices. Unlike the west, where doctors have their own offices and make their own appointments, in Shenzhen this is done through hospitals.

Many ex-pats (foreigners) cross the border to Hong Kong to see a doctor. First, the doctors there tend to be English speaking and western trained, thus making it easier, more familiar, and more accurate to receive health care. After all, communication is never more important then in discussing medical symptoms and problems.

It is no longer necessary to "cross the border." The laws are changing in China to allow for foreign doctors and foreign private hospitals to open up in China, especially Shenzhen. And one very good one did in fact open up in Shenzhen. The cost is low, even without insurance, but the quality is very good.

It is the Hong Kong University Hospital in Shenzhen. Located in the Nanshan Disctrict, across from OCT Bay, it has an entire "wing" specializing in foreigners. But even the Chinese doctors, and the "Chinese side" of the hospital,  are as good as the "western trained Hong Kong" doctors who run the VIP wing [Block V].

University of Hong Kong Shenzhen -International Medical Center
Here is my Facebook review:

This hospital and outpatient clinic is the first of its kind in China. It is run by Hong Kong University and has western trained, English speaking doctors from Hong Kong. It is brand new and ultra modern.
It has a separate section which caters to English speaking foreigners. I was told that there is one room for VIP's that occupies the entire floor.
I just spent an entire week there with severe flu, and having a lot of experience at the best hospitals in America with the best doctors (my parents were sick for extended periods), the care here rivals the care in America. The cost, however, is a mere fraction. My private room cost $20 US. I actually stayed on the Chinese side as the in-patient side for foreigners was still under construction, but the care was superb. I also had as much confidence in the Chinese doctors and nurses as I did in the supervising Hong Kong doctors, who also took care of me. In other words, the same doctors take care of the patients, no matter whether you stay in the international wing. There were English speaking doctors and nurses on duty 24 hours a day.
